Applying Atomic Habits to Marketing
I recently finished a great book called Atomic Habits by James Clear. Much of his philosophies can be applied to any facet of your life. Clear offers tips for adopting good habits, getting rid of bad ones, and improving your decision-making. I have compiled a list of memorable quotes from the book and how marketers can apply them to their profession.
“Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. Getting 1 percent better every day counts for a lot in the long run.”
Continuous learning is essential in the marketing space. With the constant change of algorithms, new channels being launched, and the introduction of new digital tools, it is important to form good learning habits each day to equip ourselves with the knowledge needed to assist clients and businesses with their marketing strategies. How can we get 1% better every day? Listen to a marketing podcast, subscribe to a newsletter, join a marketing association, network with a mentor or executive. These small habits will go a long way in building our knowledge bank.
“Make it obvious. Make it attractive. Make it easy. Make it satisfying.'“
The most effective marketing incorporates the KISS principle. Keep It Simple, Stupid. Marketing messaging should not be overcomplicated. Our content in emails, brochures, and presentations should be short and to the point. How do we make it attractive? With effective call-to-actions that clearly lay out how you will solve customer pain points. This is what will generate you customers and make them your advocates.
“If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead.”
Yes, setting goals and KPI’s is important in marketing. However, we should think of marketing as more of developing a system. A robust marketing system will introduce guidelines and allow you to scale your business. Marketing systems make your business more efficient and your customers more happy.
“Small changes often appear to make no difference until you cross a critical threshold. The most powerful outcomes of any compounding process are delayed. You need to be patient.”
Sometimes in marketing results are expected rather quickly. However, it is our efforts over time that can lead to greater results. Whether it is SEO, blogging, or being more consistent in our delivery of content. These initiatives often compound over time, so as long as we stay consistent with them. Patience can lead to great results.
